27.4.2009 – Meet the girls and boys…

I have just got back from the second full cast rehearsal and had a really good time. I was successful (I think) in my plight not to stand on Jenny’s foot, so things seem to be going to plan. I am also quite surprised at how easy it is to remember the words even though I haven’t thought of them for over a year! Tim may suggest otherwise but I was so involved in ‘The King is still in London’ that I got caught in the moment…honestly!

Kate and I are really starting to perfect our cockney accents whilst barrel rolling (massive barrels) and now it seems the only thing left to master at this stage is not (I repeat NOT) standing in a line whilst admiring the delightful singing of our soloists and managing to walk four steps forward, then backwards…and I won’t mention the step-ball-change…we can all do that, no problem!

Tomorrow we are moving on, leaving Hitler and his (lack of) b***s behind with all our dirty washing as we prepare to take on the roles of tramps… (shouldn’t be too hard then eh?) Only joking!!

When The Lights Go On Again,…. this is the third time we have done this show, all of them differing slightly.   First at the Opera House next the Joseph Rowntree theatre and now in 2009 in the Theatre Royal, this really beautiful theatre in York where we all feel so much at home.   Its the third time I’ve done it, doing different things in each production, but always playing Cinders in the funny playreading sketch, Cinderella, and this year I’m really thrilled to be leading the finale with ‘We’ll Meet Again’…. such an honour.

Two rehearsals so far, all dedicated to chorus singing and solos ; this time though, our director is introducing some harmonies, which should sound good, adding richness and depth.   My good chum Anna will put these harmonies on tape for me and I shall learn them in the solace of my home, harmony not being forte!!!.   No setting or blocking yet, thats when the fun starts and will happen after Easter when our Director and Chairman return from doing a show in Stevenage.

When The Lights Go On Again, celebrating the songs of World War 11 and the spirit that kept this country going is such a happyshow and it both delights and moves me to see the gifted young of our company, recreating things like The Andrew sisters and Gert and Daisy and seemingly loving it all, old fashioned or not, and enjoying the not so young members recreating the home Guard and The Radio Doctor.  Can’t wait for floor rehearsals to begin in earnest… much more to report then, in the meantime we must  make the most of this Easter break and learn all the words, both spoken and sung!?
